A 14-centimeter clay tablet in room 55 of the British Museum — catalogued as K.8538 and known as the Planisphere of Nineveh — may contain the astronomical observations of an event that occurred on June 29, 3123 BC. Two aerospace engineers, Alan Bond and Mark Hempsell, spent years decoding it. Their reconstruction traces a kilometer-scale object across the eastern Mediterranean, over the Alps, to a specific valley in the Austrian Tyrol called Köfels — the site of one of Europe's largest prehistoric landslides.
But the tablet's date and the landslide's date do not match. And that, more than anything else, is the mystery this video is really about.
This is the full story of the Planisphere of Nineveh: the cuneiform tablet excavated from Ashurbanipal's library by Sir Henry Layard in the 1850s, the precession calculation that places its star field in the early 4th millennium BC, the engineers who read it as a trajectory report, the geology of Köfels that contradicts their timeline by more than 4,500 years, and the honest scientific case for and against a Bronze Age cosmic airburst over Central Europe.
Includes context on the 1908 Tunguska event, the 2013 Chelyabinsk airburst, and the contested 2021 Tall el-Hammam paper in Scientific Reports that proposed a cosmic airburst destroyed a Bronze Age city in the Jordan Valley.
