What To Do If My Cigar Humidor Relative Humidity Is Too Low?

The number one question Rob Gagner gets is "How long does Boveda last?" Number two is: "My Boveda packs aren't lasting long enough/The relative humidity inside my humidor is too dry. What do I do?"

There are three main causes to this.

1. You didn't season the humidor properly. For instance, the wipe-down method only distributes about 2 grams of moisture.

Meanwhile, Boveda 84% seasoning packs, at 1x 60 gram pack per every 25 cigars in capacity, transfers 70-120g of moisture. This happens over the course of 14 days.

Boveda offer 6 different relative humidity levels, with 5 primary levels: 62, 65, 69 for airtight humidors, and 72 and 75 for wood desktop humidors. Then, there are 84% packs for seasoning your wood humidor.

2. When your relative humidity is two low, two things fight for the moisture: your cigars and the wood. Besides seasoning the wood, if your cigars aren't acclimated to 69% yet, they'll also cause low relative humidity.

For example: you have a stock of cigars which you acclimated over the course of a month. Then, you go to an event, get some fresh cigars, and toss them in your humidor. Suddenly, your RH drops!

2.5. Further, if you aren't using enough Boveda packs, it's like trying to pull a 30-foot boat with a V4. There's just not enough power.

Overall, keep in mind: cigars lose humidity four times faster than they increase in humidity.


So here's what to do:

If you're using enough 72% 60g Boveda packs for your wood humidor, one pack per 25 cigar capacity, and it's still not achieving your target RH, you have two choices:

1. Double the number of Boveda packs you're using.

2. Bump up to a higher RH level.

(Or 3: buy a better humidor!)

Also, keep in mind the seasons. For instance, Rob sees humid summers in Minnesota. Hence, Rob will go down to 69% RH packs in the summer.

When using Boveda packs, keep in mind that adding more Boveda packs won't overhumidify. The packs only raise the RH until it's at the target relative humidity.

Hence, you CAN use too many 84% seasoning packs, since too many will bring your humidor to 84% RH.

Boveda makes calibration kits for your hygrometer, which are set to 75% or 32% relative humidity. You can use your hygrometer inside the kit for 24 hours to check the hygrometer's accuracy.

A lot of hygrometers, both analogue and digital, are useless. We use hygrometers as a control, but you can't trust them unless you calibrate them! Check out our videos on hygrometers in the links above.
