Passive and Active Transport
Cells have to material in and out in order to stay alive.
Let’s first focus on passive transport.
Passive transport does not require energy to move objects in and out.
Think of passive transport like riding a bike down a hill
You don’t have to pedal you just coast down
There are two main types of passive transport
Diffusion and osmosis
In both of these objects move from high concentration to low concentration.
Here are two examples of diffusion, again moving from high concentration to low concentration.
The air in the balloon quickly moved from high concentration to low concentration
Osmosis is the diffusion of water
Active transport requires energy
We will look at three types.
First the cell uses a pump or channel to move objects from low concentration to high concentration.
This is like swimming upstream and requires energy.
A second method is called endocytosis in which the cell engulfs objects and bring them into the cell. Check out this picture
Exocytosis is the opposite and the cell expels objects out of the cell.
Hope this helps with passive and active transport
