Everyday an estimated 17 trillion (!) nurdles are produced worldwide, the semi-finished product for all plastic products. They wash up on all beaches worldwide. These plastic granules are also widely found along the Dutch rivers. This emerges from the Clean Rivers (Schone Rivieren) citizen science monitoring study along the rivers Meuse and Waal (and Rhine) in the Netherlands; a project of the Plastic Soup Foundation, IVN Natuureducatie and Stichting De Noordzee.
The nurdles often end up in rivers because plastic production sites are established in the immediate vicinity or because cargo ships are losing grains. These granules (2-5 mm) are an almost unseen problem, but are risky for consumption by animals. Once at sea, the plastic granules are impossible to clean up. It is urgent that plastic producers take their responsibility and stop this plastic pollution!
