An Unfortunate End to NYMR Annual Steam Gala!

Overall not the best day especially towards the end of the gala which is why as the title suggests is unfortunate.

Originally the last three trains of the day were 4953 on the 15:03 solo, 92134 as 92079 on the 16:00 Which would've been our last train of the day that we would film and then 34028 with D7629 on the rear on the last train of the gala, the 17:10.

Sadly during a run with 4953 heading from Pickering to Grosmont, at Levisham was reported that there was a coach failure with a hot box so the troublesome coach was removed and replaced by a brake van from Levisham to Grosmont so there could be a place for the guard to be, which unfortunately made an already rather late timetable go completely kaput.

Having seen 34028 and 92134 on the delayed 13:28 which passed us at Esk Valley at 14:03, after this the 9F then passed us heading back to Gromsont LE which it was assumed she would be going to await to haul the 16:00 service. Having looked on the Grosmont webcam to see what was going on it was seen that the Class 25 was shunting a saloon coach onto the rear and then moving the brake van off of what was to be the 16:00 train as the 15:03 was seemingly cancelled due to the lateness of the timetable. we were then waiting until 16:34 for the next train to pass us which was assumed would be either the 9F or the Hall.

Sadly it turned out to be the 25 being banked by the Hall to which the Hall would get off of the train at Goathland and return to Grosmont LE.

Then afterwards 34028 would return to Grosmont for the delayed 17:10 service to which she like 4953 would stay on the rear of the train whilst 31128 would pilot the service.

Unfortunately, 4953 isn't captured in this video on the front of a service as on her first run we decided to go and have fish and chips in Whitby due to her being banked by 92134 and fearing the 9F would do the majority of work This actually turned out to be the case so much to our frustration the replacement to 4079 Pendennis Castle was not captured hauling a train.

I'm not one to criticise on this channel but I would like to state my opinion.

Personally, I As a big fan of heritage diesels and many others including paying passengers were disappointed with the way the NYMR handled this as the majority of others railways would try their absolute best to feature a steam loco hauling a train as it is a steam gala after all, but of course it would be understandable if a diesel HAD to stand in for a failed steam loco for example. The decision to let D7629 & 31128 pilot the two guest locos whilst they were banking the train was not a popular decision by the management and left a lot of people disappointed with many feeling it had turned into a diesel gala from around 2pm onwards.

I would, however, like to give credit to the volunteers for getting through what was certainly a very challenging day and getting everyone back to wherever they started their day safely, fingers crossed their 2025 Annual Steam Gala can go more smoothly.
