Описание: Fresh anti-Hindi protests erupted in Chennai, where activists from the May 17 Movement staged a demonstration at Egmore Railway Station, attempting to blacken Hindi words on public hoardings. Police intervened swiftly and detained the protesters to restore order.

Amid the controversy, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin reaffirmed the state’s longstanding opposition to Hindi imposition.

He recalled the historic 1937–38 anti-Hindi agitation led by social reformer Periyar E. V. Ramasamy, which opposed making Hindi compulsory in schools. Stalin also noted that former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, popularly known as Kalaignar, had joined protests at Thiruvarur at the age of 14.

Stalin stressed that while several Indian states have adopted Hindi, Tamil Nadu continues to uphold its two-language policy. He credited the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for preserving the state’s linguistic identity, renaming Madras State as Tamil Nadu, and securing Classical Language status for Tamil.

The developments have once again brought the language debate into the national spotlight.
