This is the Children's Acknowledgment of Country with Key Word Signs.
Key Word Sign is an Augmentative and Communication tool, that uses signs (kindly borrowed from Auslan, Australian Sign Language), gestures and facial expression alongside speech to assist comprehension and communication of children.
While Key Word Sign was initially established for people with communication difficulties, recent research into gestures and signs reveals their use alongside speech can aid children's comprehension and learning. Therefore at Sunshine Sign and Sing we recommend the use of Children's Key Word Sign for all children.
Please note while Key Word Sign borrows signs from Auslan (Australian Sign Language) there are very important differences. One of the most important is that Key Word Sign is a communication strategy and not a replacement for language.
If your child is Deaf or Hard of Hearing and is likely to use Auslan as their primary language it is essential that your child learns Auslan from someone that is Auslan training and are part of the Deaf Community. Please visit Deaf Children Australia for more information.
