Dreaming of Home and Mother (1868) was a popular sentimental song of the Civil War era, written by John P. Ordway.

When Ordway's work was introduced into Japan, musician Kyuukei Inudou (Japanese: 犬童球渓) translated it，and made a few modifications into the Japanese version 旅愁 ( Loneliness on a Journey,) and published in 1904.

During 1905 and 1910, when the Chinese Artist Li Shutong was studying abroad in Japan, he heard this song and was moved by its melody. Accordingly, when Li returned to China, he wrote "Songbie" (Farewell Song, Chinese: 送别) in 1915 based on Ordway's original work.

In 1983, the song was used as a theme song, appeared in a Chinese drama film "My Memories of Old Beijing" (simplified Chinese: 城南旧事; traditional Chinese: 城南舊事) directed by Wu Yigong, made this song a household name.

The film was based on a novel with the same name written by Lin Haiyin, first published in 1960. It won the 3rd Golden Rooster Awards for Best Director, Best Music, and Best Supporting Actress.
