While spending time in Cartagena, Colombia, I heard about an Afro-Latino town not too far, that was actually the first free black town in all of the Americas. Runaway slaves from Cartagena, where the Spanish had settled into, had congregated and built a town in the early 1600's, which then began freeing more and more slaves until the Spanish empire was faced with no other option but to grant them complete freedom in exchange for not welcoming new escapees.
Palenque is indeed a unique place and I hope ya'll can visit one day.
