How we think often depends on the information we need to form a judgement. The story is told of how Pablo Picasso was travelling by train on a journey across Spain when he was recognized by a certain opinionated and self-important businessman who prided himself in his real-worldly (as he saw it) hard-headedness.

The businessman introduced himself, exchanged pleasantries-- then told the painter that, while he admired his success, yet he felt his painting could be much improved.

"How so?" asked a bemused Picasso.

"Well," said the self-assured critic, "your paintings are too abstract. You should paint things as they really are."

"Could you be more specific?" Picasso inquired politely.

"Certainly!" replied the businessman, and, taking out his wallet, produced a snapshot of his wife. "Take my wife, here. This is how she really is-- and not made to appear absurdly fantastic by some silly stylized representation of the kind with which artists like you indulge yourselves and cozen a trusting public."

Picasso took the photograph, studied it for a few moments, and asked, "This is how your wife actually appears?"

The businessman nodded proudly.

"Then please permit me to observe," Picasso murmured, "that she's a very small and flat woman indeed, to fit in your pocket in this way."
