Computer animation showing the detonation of a type 1a supernova. This class of event occurs in stellar binary systems, where a larger star transfers gas onto a white dwarf companion. As the gas accretes onto the compact white dwarf, it builds up until the mass of the white dwarf exceeds the limit for stability, at around 1.4 solar masses. At this point the compact star explodes as a supernova, leaving behind a glowing nebula called a supernova remnant.
