Track 12, a bonus track from the remastered 2007 reissue of his third album "Excitable Boy" released in 1978 copyright Asylum Records. It was recorded at The Sound Factory in Los Angeles and was his second produced by Jackson Browne with guitarist Waddy Wachtel assisting for the first time. Word has it that Wachtel did most of the production work. It was Zevon's breakout album and his most successful, fueled by the success of the novelty song "Werewolves of London" which became his biggest hit. The song was inspired years earlier by Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers. He suggested to Zevon that the title of the 1935 movie "Werewolf of London," which he had just watched, could be used as a song idea for a new dance craze. Zevon got together with Wachtel and bassist LeRoy Marinell for a jam and they wrote a rough version of the song in fifteen minutes. Everyone contributed lyrics as Zevon's wife Crystal hurriedly transcribed them. It all began with Waddy Wachtel's opening line, "I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand." Zevon expanded the idea to describe a debonair, aristocratic ladies man who was a predator of women out on the town in London. They wrote it off as a joke until Jackson Browne later discovered the lyrics lying around. He saw potential in the song and began playing it at his live shows before it had even been recorded. He liked the response it received and insisted it should be on the album. During the recording sessions Zevon wasn't happy with the sound of his rhythm section. But as luck would have it, Fleetwood Mac were recording down the hall in the same building. Bassist John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood were asked if they'd be willing to offer their services and it was the perfect fit for Zevon. The song was recorded live in the studio and after fifty-nine recorded takes, the second one was chosen to be on the album. Although Zevon and Wachtel didn't think the song was suitable to be played on the radio, the record company released it as the first single. It reached No. 21 in the U.S., No. 18 in Canada, No. 11 in New Zealand and No. 8 in Australia. The album received mostly excellent reviews and reached No. 14 in Canada, No. 12 in New Zealand, No. 9 in Australia & No. 8 in the U.S. Written by Warren Zevon and produced by Jackson Browne & Waddy Wachtel. Oh, Tule, it's on account of you that I been weepin'
Here behind my hand
And it's lonesome in my heart's land
As the sands of the desert
Oh, tell me, why was it always you, who through the changes
You, who always sang
And played while the green vespers rang
In the heart of the hillside
It's a sad song we always seem to be singin' it to each other
You and me
Sweet and slightly out of key
Like the sound of a running down calliope
Oh, Tule, now once I was your knight in golden armor
With the sun behind my hair
And my music filled the air
With symbols and lightning
Oh, tell me, now can't you see I'm changing like the seasons?
My hair is growing dark
And there's no room left in the Ark
For the lark with a broken wing
It's a sad song we always seem to be singin' it to each other
You and me
Sweet and slightly out of key
Like the sound of a running down calliope
Oh, Tule, it's on account of you that I'll be leaving
'Cross the deep salt sea
Whatever wide worlds I may see
Will be empty without you
It's a sad song we always seem to be singin' it to each other
In a child's voice, tender and out of tune
Does he ask if I'll be coming home soon?
Does he ask if I'll be coming home soon?
