Here I'm taking you through my daily spinal hygiene routine - including flexion, extension, rotation and translation - that only takes a few minutes to get your vertebrae moving from the cervical region down to your lumbar. I do this while the coffee is brewing and you can do this multiple times a day! If you are a desk jockey this would be a great routine to perform at your desk to force you to stand and interrupt being seated for long periods of time.
PERFORM 8-10 REPS OF THE FOLLOWING EXERCISES AT A SLOW & CONTROLLED PACE:
FLEXION + EXTENSION
ROTATION
LATERAL FLEXION
TRANSLATION FULL SPINE
FLEXION + EXTENSION
LATERAL FLEX + EXT
ROTATION
A spinal flow routine, often referred to as spinal mobility exercises or stretches, plays a crucial role in maintaining and improving the health and function of your spine. Here are some of the key reasons why a spinal flow routine is important:
Flexibility and Range of Motion: Regular spinal flow exercises can help increase the flexibility and range of motion in your spine. This is important for everyday activities and can prevent stiffness and discomfort.
Pain Prevention: A flexible and well-mobilized spine is less likely to develop chronic pain conditions, such as lower back pain or neck pain. It can also reduce the risk of developing spinal injuries.
Posture Improvement: A spinal flow routine can help improve your posture by promoting the proper alignment of the spine. Good posture is essential for overall musculoskeletal health and can reduce the risk of developing postural-related problems.
Stress Reduction: Stress and tension can accumulate in the muscles surrounding the spine. Spinal flow exercises can help release tension, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.
Enhanced Circulation: Improved spinal mobility can enhance blood circulation to the spinal region, which can aid in the delivery of nutrients and removal of waste products from the spinal tissues.
Preventing Age-Related Changes: As we age, the spine naturally undergoes degenerative changes. Regular spinal flow routines can slow down the progression of these changes and help maintain spinal health as you get older.
Functional Fitness: A mobile spine is essential for maintaining functional fitness. It allows you to perform various activities, such as bending, twisting, lifting, and reaching, with ease and reduced risk of injury.
Core Strength: Many spinal flow exercises engage the core muscles, which are essential for stabilizing the spine and supporting good posture.
Injury Rehabilitation: Spinal flow exercises can be part of the rehabilitation process for individuals recovering from spinal injuries or surgeries. They can aid in regaining mobility and strength in the spine.
Overall Well-Being: A healthy spine is vital for overall well-being. When your spine feels good, you're more likely to be active and enjoy a higher quality of life.
