Henry Cowell (1897-1965): Symphony No. 9 (1953)
David Van Vactor conducting the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra
American composer Henry Cowell created 20 complete symphonies (and a number 21 unfinished but in sketch form) yet only a few have been recorded. Several have never even been performed. However, since Cowell is considered by many to be a premiere American composer who has explored multiple musical modes from traditional tonality through the avant garde, it seems that his full symphony oeuvre should be explored more fully. His recorded symphonies (2, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 15 and 16) contain slightly over 1/3 of his symphony output; there do also exist several concert performances of lesser-known symphonies which were recorded in aircheck but never commercially issued. This Symphony No. 9 is one of them. There are several audio glitches which make this recording less than perfect, but the performance are well worth the listening. (Please be warned that the unknown click occurring several times late-on in the performance cannot be removed without considerable damage to the performance. I upload it here due to the rarity of the work.) For those who like the tonal Cowell, this symphony will be a treat.
