Born in Lyallpur, Chand Burke rose from a disciplined Christian family to dominate Lahore’s film scene in the 1940s. Her dance, grace, and fearless attitude earned her the title “Dancing Lily of Punjab.” At a time when women on screen were expected to be restrained, Chand Burke was bold, expressive, and unapologetically powerful.

Her promising career took a brutal hit during the Partition of 1947. Forced to leave Lahore and rebuild life in Bombay, her flourishing stardom suddenly stalled. After years of near-obscurity, destiny gave her one defining moment.

Director Raj Kapoor was searching for an actress with razor-sharp dialogue delivery and natural authority for Boot Polish (1954). After rejecting nearly 200 actresses, Chand Burke walked in—and changed cinema history. Her portrayal of the cruel, dominating aunt became so iconic that it immortalized her in Hindi cinema, even though she never became a conventional star.

Her personal life was marked by tough choices—divorce, remarriage, motherhood, and sacrifice. Chand Burke dreamed that her son would become a film hero, but when that dream didn’t materialize, she quietly shifted her hopes to her grandson.

She passed away in 2008, largely forgotten by the industry she helped shape.

Years later, when a young man burst onto the screen with explosive energy, uninhibited confidence, and unstoppable charisma, very few knew the truth—that fire was inherited.
That legacy belonged to Chand Burke.

The world knows him today as Ranveer Singh—but his spark, his fearlessness, and his screen electricity trace back to a woman history almost erased.
