Khel ki Rihla is a documentary on a Non Profit Organisation called the Aagaaz Theatre Trust that works out of the Nizamuddin Basti in Delhi. The founder of Aagaaz, Sanyukta Saha had worked with Aga Khan Foundation during the Urban Renewal Project of the Basti, where she had encountered strategies of revitalisation of the community through the introduction of theatre and arts practises for the children.
Aagaaz had started informally in 2009, and the kids who they had worked with during that time have grown into young adults. Nine of them are now part of the repertoire which works regularly with the kids. Other facilitators are art and theatre practitioners in and around Delhi.
During the past few years, the repertory members have performed various plays that were staged across the country. Directors and theatre practitoners worked with the members of the community and created plays with them, bringing out stories rooted in context and telling them with dignity.
One of these plays is called Rihla, which started with the question of ‘What kind of country do you want to live in?’ This brings forth arguments and fights between the characters, where they mock and educate each other and reveal their dreams, fears and secrets.
In the film, aspects of Rihla are interspersed with the space of Aagaaz to create a narrative that tells the story of this space, and what it might mean to the people who inhabit it.
