In this video it shows our progress so far on picking up hooves, Raven has already gained so much trust in me throughout this process and I will continue to develop this and also begin the same training method with her hind hooves.
Firstly, I taught Raven to stand still facing forward, willingly and calmly (Video shown on this channel, which is worth a look). I then progressed to teaching touch acceptance (another video shown on this channel), starting at the shoulder and progressively traveling down her legs only when she was calm and happy. Then I placed my hand a few millimetres away from her hoof giving her the chance to lift her hoof first, however if your horse needs further instruction then you could touch the horse's cannon and use the bridge signal whilst doing this, this can help the horse to understand what is being asked and eventually they will target your hand. I will be adding a verbal cue such as 'pick' as I may do other things with and around her legs and I don't want her to get confused.
Time and patience is key! After all, you are asking a big deal when it comes to standing on three legs, you never know when a lion might be near by... ;-)
