The building's history dates back to the 1920s, when it was originally constructed as the headquarters for the Durant Motor Company. The headquarters was surrounded on both sides by a large factory, and was later acquired by Fisher Body to produce auto bodies for General Motors. The site is most famously known for the great Flint Sit-Down Strike, which closed numerous GM plants nationwide until the company agreed to allow workers to unionize with the United Auto Workers. For decades, this plant produced Fisher Bodies until its closure in the 1980s. Today, the only remaining part of the massive automotive complex is the administration building, which ironically houses the original office of GM founder Billy Durant. Imagine the weighty discussions that took place here during the pivotal strikes. This glimpse into the building offers a window into an important piece of automotive history.
