You are standing in a forest clearing outside Moscow in November. Forty-one men in cornflower blue shoulder boards stamped with the letters ГБ — Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti — Committee for State Security. An instructor asks whether you believe the Soviet state has the right to eliminate an individual human being to protect the collective. You say yes. You do not yet know what you have been selected for. The unit you are about to enter has existed under different names since 1936 — the Directorate of Special Tasks, Spets Byuro Number One, the 13th Department, Department V. The names change every decade because the operations are so extreme that each iteration must be officially dissolved and rebuilt so the Politburo can maintain the fiction that the previous version never existed.
In this video, we climb through every rank of the KGB's darkest divisions — from the Junior Lieutenant practicing dry cleaning runs through Moscow streets learning to detect and lose surveillance tails, all the way to the Colonel General sitting in Lubyanka Square commanding a global intelligence apparatus that employed over 500,000 personnel, managed thousands of agents across every continent, and conducted assassinations, sabotage operations, and deep-cover illegal penetrations that shaped the Cold War in ways most people will never learn about.
The KGB — the Committee for State Security — served as the sword and shield of the Communist Party from 1954 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Within this massive bureaucracy existed several elite units that represented the most secretive and lethal instruments of Soviet power:
⚬ The 13th Department — the assassination unit responsible for "wet work" (mokroye delo), including the liquidation of Ukrainian nationalists Lev Rebet and Stepan Bandera using cyanide spray guns that induced fatal heart attacks leaving zero forensic evidence
⚬ Department V — the successor to the 13th Department, expanding the mission from individual assassinations to strategic sabotage of Western infrastructure including NATO power plants, oil pipelines, and satellite ground stations
⚬ Directorate S — the most revered subdivision of the First Chief Directorate, managing the "illegals" program where officers assumed the identities of foreign citizens and lived in target countries for decades without any connection to the Soviet Union
⚬ Laboratories 1 and 12 — the technical units that developed exotic assassination weapons including cyanide mist devices, cigarette case guns, strychnine-laced chocolates, poisoned alcohol, and silent firearms
⚬ The Ninth Directorate — the 40,000-man force protecting the Kremlin leadership, managing the VIP subway evacuation system, and operating special kitchens that tested every Politburo meal for poison
This video covers the complete career trajectory through the darkest divisions:
⚬ Junior Lieutenant — apprentice at the 401st School in Okhta learning konspiratsiya, dead drops, cipher communication, and the Wanted List
⚬ Lieutenant — introduction to Laboratory 1 weapons including the cyanide spray gun used in the Bandera assassination
⚬ Senior Lieutenant — technical assistant managing chemical agents and disguised firearms for active operations
⚬ Captain — first foreign deployment running agent networks and recruiting sources
⚬ The Illegal — Directorate S deep-cover deployment living under a fabricated identity for years or decades in a Western country, raising children who never know their parent's true nationality
⚬ Major — handler managing deployed illegals and overseeing Department V infrastructure sabotage target packages including Operation TAYFUN
⚬ Lieutenant Colonel — sub-directorate commander navigating Operation RYAN and the institutional paranoia of the early 1980s
⚬ Colonel — rezident of a major Western capital commanding dozens of officers, managing the shadow economy, and authorizing liquidations from the Wanted List
⚬ Major General — directorate commander briefing the Politburo while being surveilled by the Seventh Directorate under the same naruzhka protocols applied to enemies of the state
⚬ Colonel General — head of the First Chief Directorate watching the Soviet empire collapse while knowing the darkest divisions would survive under new names
