Organizational drift has been implicated in numerous catastrophes, from the NASA shuttle disasters, to Deepwater horizon, to aviation accidents, to the 2008 financial meltdown. Often described as people drifting away (i.e., violating) procedures or standards, it is seen as a significant threat to organizational success. But what is drift? And, most importantly, what do we do about it? Maybe to answer these questions, we need to shift our perspective a little bit. Rather than only looking at drift after something bad happens, what does drift look like when everything is going fine? We know there is drift into failure, but what about drift into success? And, importantly, what does this mean for how we manage operations to avoid failures and get more success? These questions and more will be answered in this presentation through a combination of reviewing relevant research and discussing case studies. Come ready to rethink everything you think you know about drift, operations, and adaptation.
