In the mid 20th century, growing concerns about pedestrian safety around railroads was becoming more widespread. The original solution to this was the pedestrian gate. It is a smaller gate blocking sidewalks from pedestrians. They come in two styles, a separate gate motor for the pedestrian gate, or a pedestrian gate attached to a road gate motor. Both styles are present in this video.
For a crossing to make this compilation, the crossing must have road gates in addition to pedestrian gates, as such, pedestrian-only crossings are not counted.
Pedestrian gates can often be questioned for their level of effectiveness. Any pedestrian can easily walk around them, or if fencing is present, duck under them. When using their own gate motor, they are nearly as expensive as a road gate. As seen at 6:51, a gate attached to a main road gate often sags and is not of appropriate length, making it virtually useless.
