During WWII, U.S. Army engineers could assemble a full pontoon bridge in less than 12 hours. The one built over the Elbe region in April 1945 took around 300 combat engineers working in rotating teams, dropping pontoons into the water and locking them together while tanks were already lining up to cross.
These floating bridges allowed American armored divisions to move faster than German defenses could react. Without them, the advance toward the Elbe would have slowed by days, giving enemy units time to regroup. Engineers kept the entire offensive alive.
