British R&B fans knew something exciting was happening when the BBC started playing Mahalia's 'Love and Compromise' a few years ago. It wasn't the young singer's first album; that was an indie salutation of a few years prior entitled 'Diary of Me' and flecked with tunes of youthful introspection such as "17," "Rollercoaster," and "Silly Girl." By 2019 and the arrival of 'L&C,' the Jill Scott-lovin' singer who also has a place in her heart for Corrine Bailey Rae, was much more mature, and the music's presentation makes it clear. There was emotional weight in play. "What You Did" (a collab with Ella Mai) and "I Wish I Missed My Ex" were song that felt lived in. It was satisfying, not shocking when she took home the Best Female Act and Best R&B/Soul Act nods at the 2020 MOBO Awards. And the steady progress put her on Adele's radar, too. Last summer Mahalia was part of the superstar's all-women concert at Hyde Park. So we were glad to have her into our place for a spin through “Terms and Conditions” and “In My Bag.” The title of the latter performance says you all you need to know.
