SCIENTIFIC THEORIES: THE ARROW OF TIME
WHY DIRECTION EMERGES FROM REGULATION, NOT FROM TIME ITSELF
The arrow of time is usually explained as the fact that time “moves forward” because entropy increases.
From a Field Mechanics perspective, time does not have a direction.
Direction emerges from regulation and coherence, not from time itself.
Time is a neutral measurement of continuity.
It does not point anywhere.
What creates direction is:
• irreversible regulation
• feedback integration
• memory accumulation
• coherence management
Systems appear to move “forward” because:
• past states are stored
• corrections are applied
• integrations cannot be undone without cost
• regulation prefers stability over reversal
This is why:
• broken systems do not spontaneously reassemble
• memories accumulate instead of erase
• learning moves one way
• evolution builds on prior structure
Not because time flows —
but because regulation is asymmetric.
Reversal is theoretically possible,
but requires:
• perfect information
• zero loss
• infinite precision
Which no real system has.
The arrow of time is:
• the direction of learning
• the direction of integration
• the direction of reduced optionality
As systems stabilize, options collapse into structure.
Time appears directional because:
• regulation leaves traces
• memory anchors continuity
• feedback locks in changes
Direction is not a property of time.
It is a property of regulated systems.
The future is not ahead.
It is what remains viable after regulation.
That is Field Mechanics
