Red Fleshed apples, or "blood apples" are in need of improvement. They are very interesting and often have excellent flavors, but they tend to be low in sugar and suffer from texture problems. I select outstanding parents to breed them with in hopes that I can come up with red fleshed apples of improved desert quality. Click here to see the whole series on my amateur apple breeding project and how to do it all from pollination to fruit.
We look at rootstock production, pollinated fruits, new and older seedlings.
First many varieties of apples are grown to test which varieties are worth using as parents. Once the parents are selected, the flowers are cross pollinated one at a time with pollen from another selected parent tree. In the fall, the seeds are harvested from the apples and stored under refrigeration until late winter, when they are planted in the greenhouse. In spring the apple seedlings are planted out. After growing for one year, the seedlins are cut off of their original roots and grafted onto dwarfing rootstock and planted out in rows to grow until they fruit, hopefully within a few years.
