In Homa Bay County, climate shocks, land degradation, and limited land ownership have hit female-headed households hardest. Through the Gender Inclusive Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) Project, communities in Gwassi Division are turning this around, regenerating degraded land, restoring food security, and building resilient livelihoods.
So far, 3,715 hectares have been protected from degradation, 4,169 farmers trained in sustainable natural resource management, and 1,110 households are using clean cookstoves. Women-led groups are driving income through activities like honey production and cookstove liner making, while the average period of food insecurity has dropped from four months to two per household.
This is what climate resilience looks like when women lead.
