e(c)lipse(d) is a solo percussion work for vibraphone, tuned pipes, and several different sets of wind and patio chimes. The piece was inspired by a confluence of events around the 2017 total solar eclipse that passed through the middle of the country. As I viewed the event in Lincoln, NE with friends and family who came from all over the country, I found myself thinking of other important people in my life and how fortuitous it is that our orbits or ellipses crossed even briefly.
Musically speaking, the piece starts with a clear and simple harmonic palette that is gradually darkened and saturated chromatically and rhythmically. Most significantly, e(c)lipse(d) is an homage to my former teacher and mentor Christopher Deane, whose initials are embedded in the title and pitch content of the piece.
