If you take the subway or a bus in Seoul, you'll probably come across digital billboards now and then, celebrating an idol group member’s birthday. These birthday ads have become such a familiar sight that they now feel like a part of everyday fan culture. Let’s take a closer look at how fans celebrate their stars' birthdays, why these events matter and how this culture continues to grow.
We'll do that with David Kim, content creator and adjunct professor at Daegu Cyber University.

Q1. Let’s start by talking about idols born in January, who are being celebrated by their fans this month.
Who are some of the most well-known stars, and what kind of birthday events do fans organize for them?

Q2. Celebrating an idol’s birthday involves checking out the billboards, visiting birthday cafés, and collecting special "goods."
From fans' perspectives why is this whole process so fun and meaningful?

Q3. I’m especially intrigued by those fan-organized birthday cafés. Even though the idol isn’t actually there, fans still go out of their way to make a visit. What kind of space do these cafés represent for fans?

Q4. We also see fans making their own merchandise or even organizing birthday donations and charity projects.
Why do you think these types of celebrations resonate so strongly with fans?

Q5. Is this birthday culture unique to Korean fandoms, or are we seeing similar trends among international fans as well?

Q6. Idols also give back to their fans.
Tell us about this interaction and how that further spreads birthday-centered fan culture.

Q7. At the same time, some people raise concerns about rising costs or excessive competition.
What's your thought on that and do you think K-pop birthday culture will continue to thrive?
