Taurus 650: A Handy Hammerless

The 650 from Taurus is hammerless 357 magnum that come in silver or matte black and can be had with a 2 or 3 inch barrel. Taurus sent is a 2 inch matte black one to try out. The key feature of the 650 is the hammerless design. This lends it to more comfortable carry and less risk of hanging up on the draw. With 38 special loaded the recoil is negligible and the little 22 ounce revolver is easy to shoot as the trigger is heavy but smooth through the entire pull. It is a double action only so the trigger pull that is just under 10 pounds is expected. The sights are simple with a ramp up front that is nicely serrated to mitigate glare and the rear notch is integral to the frame. The grips are a medium hardness rubber that work well at controlling even hot 38 spl loads. With 357 magnum loaded the the Taurus 650 is far from unusable but after 40 round of 357 mag my hand had had enough. Given the availability of a 3 inch barrel from them I would highly suggest that if you intend to run 357 magnum through this handgun a lot that you opt for that feature. The Taurus 650 is what I have come to expect from Taurus in the recent years, a simple, reliable and affordable system that doesn't turn many heads, but it easy to keep around. I think I will be getting one of the 3 inch versions for kayaking and fishing as this systems offers a lot of horsepower in a convenient pack that is easier to pack around that similar Smith and Wesson and Colt offerings. While the S&W model 60 isn't far off from this design, I can't justified the extra for the Smith.
