The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is a highly revered mantra from the ancient Hindu scriptures, specifically the Rigveda and the Yajurveda. It is also known as the Rudra Mantra or the Tryambakam Mantra, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The mantra is believed to have the power to conquer death (mrityu means death; jaya means victory) and provide protection, healing, and liberation.
The Mantra:
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्।
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात्॥
Transliteration:
Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam
Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat
Meaning:
Om: The universal sound, invoking the divine.
Tryambakam: Refers to the three-eyed one (Lord Shiva).
Yajamahe: We worship, adore, or honor.
Sugandhim: The fragrant one, symbolizing virtues and blessings.
Pushtivardhanam: The sustainer of nourishment and well-being.
Urvarukamiva: Like a ripe cucumber (or fruit) is freed from its stem.
Bandhanan: From the bondage (of worldly attachments and death).
Mrityor: From death.
Mukshiya: May you liberate us.
Maamritat: Grant us immortality or spiritual enlightenment.
Significance:
1. Healing and Longevity: It is chanted for good health, longevity, and freedom from ailments.
2. Protection: Provides a shield against negative forces and untimely death.
3. Spiritual Growth: Helps in attaining spiritual awakening and liberation (moksha).
4. Peace and Calmness: Regular chanting brings inner peace and clarity of mind.
This mantra is often chanted during rituals, meditation, and in times of adversity for strength and solace.
