Mikail Tariverdiev is an absolute master of melody and mood. His music has truly enriched my life and I'm forever grateful to the YouTube correspondent who first steered me towards it. This video is now my ninth recording of music by Tariverdiev. Each and every piece has been an absolute joy to play - you can find the other videos in my 'Russia' playlist. I hope you'll share my enthusiasm for this wonderful composer.
A 'nocturne' is a musical depiction of the calm beauty of night, typically in a romantic vein. Tariverdiev's essay in this musical form certainly has an air of mournful beauty but it also has a distinct sense of threat. Hence the thumbnail.
When putting this arrangement together, I let my imagination run quite freely. Along the way we hear the mournful Clarinet, the Great chorus, a fortissimo pedal, and the really beautiful lower register of the Swell Trumpet. That crunchy final chord - on the delicious Swell strings - encapsulates the edgy quality running throughout this music.

Played by Paul Broadhurst on the vintage Father Willis organ of Christ Church, Birkenhead, UK

Thumbnail: The Starry Night [detail] by Vincent Van Gogh. Is it too fanciful to view the dark figure on the left as a surreal depiction of the spire of Christ Church ...?
