Here at the Todd and Karen Wanek Family Program for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, we are working on new ways to delay and even prevent heart transplants for people with congenital heart defects.
We are excited to announce a new clinical trial using bone marrow stem cells to strengthen the heart muscle. Bone marrow stem cells are collected from an individual, processed and then injected back into the individual’s body to help grow the heart stronger.
Our program also has another clinical study to help infants with HLHS. During birth, stem cells are collected from the cord blood and then processed. Around three months of age, during the second surgery, these stem cells are directly injected into the heart muscle. These cells act like fertilizer to help grow the heart stronger helping to prevent and delay the weakening of the heart.
