Описание:
Nothosaurus, an extinct marine reptile, not a dinosaur, thrived in the Triassic period (240-210 million years ago). Its name, meaning "false lizard," stemmed from early misunderstandings of its semi-aquatic nature. Characterized by a long neck, webbed feet, and a flat skull with sharp, outward-pointing teeth, it was an effective fish trap for small aquatic prey.
Averaging 13 feet, Nothosaurus likely ambushed fish and crustaceans in warm, shallow seas. Uniquely, it could also venture onto land, possibly for resting or basking, much like modern seals. This versatility, coupled with filling ecological niches after the Permian-Triassic extinction, allowed Nothosaurus to flourish before its own demise during the Triassic-Jurassic extinction event.
