*Hairy Woodpecker - "Big Bill, Big Attitude!"
This powerful and masterful drumming Hairy Woodpecker shows off its impressive long bill as it searches for insects in large trees along the Avon riverbank. So huge, this was the very first time I've seen this woodpecker species and it was so surprising how large they really are-appears similar size to a robin. The Hairy Woodpecker, is a powerhouse of the forest, unlike its smaller, more common look-alike the downy woodpecker. It certainly has been a wonderful start to the season far for the northern cardinals as I've seen many males and females hidden along the quiet snowy trails. Nature at its best!


Did you know?
Why are they named Hairy woodpecker?
They have on their back soft feathers that appear to look like hair.
Males sport a red patch on the back of their head, and they use their barbed tongues to extract insects, helping control pests. These resilient birds are widespread, found in forests from Alaska to Central America, often visiting feeders for suet and seeds, and are known for their loud "peek" calls and territorial drumming.


These birds will enjoy backyard feeders: suet, black sunflower seeds, peanuts, & more.
