The Government of Pakistan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed two significant climate-focused initiatives aimed at strengthening resilience, promoting sustainable agriculture, and advancing inclusive growth. The agreements include the Sindh Coastal Resilience Sector Project (USD 180.5 million) and the Punjab Climate Resilient and Low Carbon Agriculture Mechanization Project (USD 124 million).
Secretary Ministry of Economic Affairs, Muhammad Humair Karim, appreciated ADB’s continued partnership and support, noting that the Sindh Coastal Resilience Project will enhance integrated water resources and flood risk management, restore nature-based coastal defenses, and strengthen institutional and community capacity. Financed through ADB, the Green Climate Fund, and the Government of Sindh, the project is expected to benefit over 3.8 million people in Thatta, Sujawal, and Badin districts.
He further highlighted that the Punjab Climate Resilient and Low Carbon Agriculture Mechanization Project will boost agricultural productivity and climate resilience across 30 districts of Punjab, improve access to climate-smart machinery for small farmers, reduce residue burning through circular agriculture practices, and empower 15,000 women through skills development and livelihood diversification.
ADB Country Director Ms. Emma Fan commended Pakistan’s strong commitment, underscoring the importance of both projects in addressing climate risks, protecting vulnerable communities, modernizing agriculture, and reducing emissions. Both sides reaffirmed their resolve to ensure effective utilization of funds and timely implementation of the initiatives.
