Fred Lowery lost his sight at the age of two due to complications from scarlet fever. He attended the Texas School for the Blind in Austin from age seven.
Career: Despite being legally blind, Lowery was a highly self-sufficient and talented performer. He was dubbed "The Blind Whistler" by bandleader Horace Heidt.
Notable Work: He is recognized as one of the greatest whistlers and performed the whistling on Leroy Holmes' hit recording of "The High And The Mighty". He also released several records, including the track "Listen to the Mocking Bird" featured on the record label in the image, and others like "Indian Love Call" / "I Love You Truly".
