The Career Builder
The final category of people who often show an interest in becoming a yacht broker, are people who already have a successful career but are seeking something even more fulfilling and potentially more financially rewarding. It’s not unusual for these people to already be in the yachting industry, such as yacht Captains, managers, and insurance agents.
It goes without saying that this group of individuals could be just one short step away from becoming yacht brokers IF they apply a suitable strategy.
Once again, it is useful to remember the requisites that a brokerage company looks for in a broker:
relevant connections
your knowledge of yachts and the yachting industry
a proven ability to network
successful experience in sales
I have to assume that a career builder looking to move into yacht brokerage has at least 3 of these 4, but even with solid professional experience it is not always easy to enter into the brokerage field.
Transparency is the key to lasting success. If you have a buyer who is looking to buy a yacht, that does not make you a yacht broker, so don’t present yourself as one. The buyer will not respect you for it, the seller will not respect you for it, and you will build resentment amongst the yacht brokerage community.
There are two sides of yacht brokerage:
• Representing the Seller
• Representing the Buyer
There are two ways of going about working on your first deal. The easy way, and the hard way. The easy way involves having a degree of trust in another broker.
Offer to introduce your client to a broker, but with the written understanding that the introduction is to enable you to learn the industry and with the eventual goal of becoming a broker yourself. If you can avoid it, don’t ask a yacht broker unless you have an excellent relationship with him. Ask the owner of the brokerage or the CEO and insist that the arrangement is put into writing. He will then assign a broker to work with you.
Understand the difference between a broker and a brokerage:

A broker is not interested in your connections, how much you know about yachts, your ability to network, or your experience in sales. You represent competition to him...even if you work for the same company. A brokerage company owner or CEO on the other hand needs to find new brokers with fresh connections and a fresh approach. They will most likely appreciate your honest, transparent, and fresh approach and will instruct one of their brokers to work with you.
In any case, whether you decide to work with a broker or a brokerage company, make sure that you have a written understanding.
