TAZARA goes in the opposite direction as the Lobito Corridor from Zambia to Tanzania. It was built in the 1970s by the Chinese to haul copper out of the mines for export to China. At its completion, it was the longest railway in Africa and was China's largest foreign aid project by China with a construction cost of $3.06 billion in today's dollars.
TAZARA is in a state of disrepair as this documentary demonstrates. Derailments, trains running out of fuel, and mechanical failures are a daily occurrence.
