Basetsana Julia “Bassie” Kumalo is a celebrated South African media personality whose illustrious career is capped with accolades. She has been gracing screens for over a decade and has quickly become one of Mzansi’s finest.

However, of interest is that her thrust into the limelight came in the backdrop of her crowning as Miss and Miss Black South Africa at the age of 16 in 1990. Four years later, she was crowned Miss South Africa and first runner-up in Miss World. Since then, she has established herself as a celebrated businesswoman and philanthropist.

Kumalo was born and bred in Soweto. However, her family was hit by serious financial woes at some point, which birthed her entrepreneurial skills. To keep afloat, she started selling sandwiches at soccer matches every weekend.
