Specialized developed a proprietary bottom bracket system known as OSBB (Oversized Bottom Bracket). It was intended to mimic the BB30 standard but incorporated unique shell dimensions, which limited compatibility with third-party cranksets. To address this, Specialized began bonding plastic inserts into the carbon shell using epoxy, effectively converting the interface to BB30.
Over time, these inserts commonly became unbonded, leading to bearing misalignment, creaking, and in some cases, the entire bottom bracket spinning within the frame. Rebonding was possible but rarely restored correct alignment.
This particular frame presented with that exact fault, along with secondary damage requiring additional intervention. The chosen solution was to fit a thread-together bottom bracket, which provides better structural support and maintains concentricity through tighter manufacturing tolerances.
The replacement unit employs double-lip seals that offer good environmental resistance. Although these are described as “food grade,” they are not formally certified. They introduce higher frictional drag, but this was a deliberate specification requested by the owner for enhanced sealing performance.
