Welcome back to my channel! In today’s video we’ll discuss how to take care of Catasetum Orchids when they are coming out of dormancy. In this case my Monnierara Millennium Magic 'Witchcraft' did not stay dormant very long, so we have to repot it - if we wait too long we will risk damaging the roots as they get longer.
Generally everything with this orchid is gradual - We let it go into dormancy gradually - slowly easing off on the watering. We let it wake up gradually - slowly watering the new growth. Important to note that watering does not begin until the roots are 4” - 6” long. I’m repotting this orchid since it has a new growth and we are setting it up for success in its new pot.
I’ve cut the old roots off, as they are unlikely to survive next season’s growth cycle. The new roots will take over the pot and be what the orchid relies on for growth. In the meantime, the new bulb will continue to get energy from the old bulb while it grows.
These complex hybrids tend to not stay dormant very long. It’s generally advised to repot in the Spring - In this case since it as a new growth we are doing it now. Dormancy is triggered by day length and temperatures. Growing indoors - this orchid is not getting cold temps, which is why it’s probably pushing out a new growth now.
