Once, there was a beautiful princess who hated one thing above all: spinning wool. Her mother, the Queen, insisted she learn, but the princess’s fingers were clumsy and her heart wasn't in it. One day, the Queen became so frustrated that she locked the princess in a high tower with three massive rooms filled with raw flax. "Spin this all into gold yarn by the week’s end," the Queen commanded, "or you shall never leave."
The princess sat on the floor and cried, knowing the task was impossible. Suddenly, the door creaked open, and three strange, elderly women stepped inside. They were peculiar to look at: one had a foot so broad it flat-bottomed like a shovel, the second had a thumb so wide it looked like a paddle, and the third had a lower lip so long and swollen that it hung down over her chin. "We will spin this gold for you," the women whispered, "but only if you invite us to your wedding and call us your aunts." The princess, desperate to be free, agreed instantly.
The three witches set to work with incredible speed. The one with the broad foot trod the wheel, the one with the wide thumb twisted the thread, and the third woman constantly licked her lip to wet the yarn, which made her lip grow even more swollen and red. By the end of the week, the rooms were filled with shimmering gold yarn. When the Queen arrived, she was so impressed that she immediately arranged for the princess to marry a handsome prince from a neighboring kingdom.
On the wedding day, the three strange women arrived in tattered clothes. The guests whispered in shock, but the princess kept her word and seated them at the head table as her "aunts." The Prince, curious and concerned, leaned over to the first woman and asked, "How did you get such a flat, broad foot?" She replied, "From treading the spinning wheel for fifty years." He asked the second, "How did you get such a wide thumb?" She answered, "From twisting the thread for fifty years." Finally, he asked the third, "Why is your lip so swollen and heavy?" She sighed, "From licking the yarn to make it smooth."
The Prince looked at his beautiful bride and then back at the worn-out women. Fearing for his wife’s beauty, he declared, "From this day forward, my princess shall never touch a spinning wheel again!" The princess was overjoyed; she had helped the needy women by giving them honor and a feast, and in return, they had freed her from a lifetime of labor she hated. The moral is that true kindness and keeping your promises can bring unexpected rewards that change your life forever.
