Piano Sonata no. 38 by Joseph Haydn (Hob XVI:23) / II. Adagio. Live performance at the Sprague Memorial Hall, Yale University (Yevgeny Morozov, piano). AUDIO + sheet music.
---------- Franz Joseph Haydn (31 March 1732 – 31 May 1809) was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was a friend and mentor of Mozart, a tutor of Beethoven.
Joseph Haydn excelled in every musical genre. He was instrumental in the development of chamber music such as the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String Quartet". His music circulated widely, and for much of his career he was the most celebrated composer in Europe.
Although Joseph Haydn rarely appeared in public as a pianist, he composed and published many more piano sonatas than concert pianist Mozart.
Haydn’s six Piano Sonatas Hob. XVI:21-26 were published in 1774 with a dedication to Prince Nicholas Esterházy I. The Sonata in F major in its three movements reveals the typical features of Haydn's style in the early 1770s. The playful opening movement with its two contrasting themes, the wonderfully melancholic Adagio in f minor and the lively Presto finale make this work a prime example of the classical sonata. Perhaps this is why this technically challenging work remains to this day the most popular of the entire collection.
---------- Yevgeny Morozov is a concert pianist, located in the state of New Jersey, USA, with degrees from YALE, MANNES School of Music and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He is a Prize-Winner of many international piano competitions in U.S. and Europe, including IKIF Artist Recognition Competition in NYC, YAMAHA Music Foundation of Europe Scholarships Competition in London, John Ireland Competition in Glasgow, U.K., Dublin International Piano competition in Ireland, Kil's International Piano Competition in Sweden, HUMMEL International Piano Competition in Slovakia, Prokofiev's International Music Festival in Moscow, among others. Apart from solo performing, Yevgeny Morozov collaborates in chamber music recitals and has frequently appeared as a piano soloist with orchestra.
