Our family discovered Momos when we were living a walk away from a hole in the wall Nepalese restaurant.
I then have recreated my own version of this steamed dumpling. Some say you do not need to cook the filling but as it was chicken I didn’t want to take my chances.
Ingredients
Dough
2 cups of flour
1 tsp salt
Warm water. Enough to make into a dough.
Filling
200g Chicken breast
2 tbsp oil
1 chopped onion
1/2 tsp of minced garlic
1/2 tsp minced ginger
100g chopped cabbage
115g grated carrots
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp salt
2 tbsp spring onion
Handful fresh coriander
1-2 tbsp soya sauce
Method
1)Sauté the onion in a little oil until softened.
2)Add the garlic, garlic, salt & pepper.
3)Add the chicken and cook it for a few minutes.
4)Add the veg on medium heat and cover the pan to soften the veg quicker. We still want a crunch.
5)Switch off the heat and add the spring onion and soya sauce.
Assembling
1)Roll out the dough thinly to a few mm thickness.
2)Stuff the dumplings with the mixture.
Steaming
1)In a pan add water and place the oiled rack into the pot.
2)Once the water is boiled place the dumplings onto the rack.
3)Cover the pan and cook on low to medium heat for 10-12 minutes.
4)Once you notice the dumpling is shiny it should be done.
Serve with some tangy chutney.
