As urban areas expand and natural habitats shrink, encounters between people and wild animals are becoming more frequent. Livestock losses, crop damage, threats to safety, and fear often lead to retaliation, often through poisoning, trapping, or indiscriminate killing.
But conflict does not have to mean cruelty.
Human–wildlife conflict is complex. It affects farmers, rural communities, conservation authorities, and the animals themselves. Reactive responses can escalate tensions, destabilise ecosystems, and cause prolonged suffering.
The NSPCA plays a critical role in addressing these situations lawfully and humanely. Through its Inspectorate, the NSPCA:
• Investigates cruelty linked to conflict situations
• Intervenes where wild or domestic animals are suffering
• Works alongside conservation authorities and law enforcement
• Promotes humane, legal mitigation measures
• Provides guidance to landowners and communities
The goal is to uphold the law, protect animal welfare, and promote solutions that reduce harm to both people and wildlife. Conflict may be inevitable in shared landscapes. Cruelty is not.
If you are experiencing human–wildlife conflict, contact the NSPCA for guidance before taking action. Humane, lawful intervention protects animals, communities, and ecosystems alike.
