Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was a great reformer. He was from a noble family of the later Mughal Court. He joined East India Company Service as a sub judge. After 1857 he worked largely for the betterment of Indians in general and Indian Muslims in particular. He started the scientific society in Ghazipur and later on transferred to Aligarh to Promote science among Indians. In 1869 he visited London for his son Syed Mahmood’s education. There he wrote a book: - “Seerat-e Muhammadia”. In this book, he tried to answer the Objections of Sir William Muir’s book on the life of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). Coming back to India he started a monthly journal Tahzibul Akhlaq with a subtitle of Mohammadan Social Reformer. In this journal, he touched on many burning issues of the Muslim society which started several controversies. Later on, he with his friends started Madarsatul Uloom or Mohammadan Angelo Oriental College in Aligarh, which became Aligarh Muslim University in 1920. He also wrote a commentary on the Holy Quran and the Bible.
He also started a modern style of writing in Urdu. In his essays in Tahzibul Akhlaq, he used modern prose style which was necessary for modern European Knowledge. He also edited important historical work like Aain-e- Akbari and Taareekh-e-Firoz Shahi. One of the most important works is Asbabe Baghawate Hind (on the causes for the First struggle for Indian Independence) in 1859.
