মাঘী শুক্লপক্ষীয়া `জয়া' একাদশী ব্রত মাহাত্ম্য ভবিষ্যোত্তর পুরাণে শ্রীকৃষ্ণ-যুধিষ্ঠির সংবাদ রূপে বর্ণিত হয়েছে।
শ্রীগরুড়পুরাণে মাঘ মাসের শুক্লপক্ষীয়া একাদশী তিথিকে `ভৈমী' একাদশী নামে অভিহিত করা হয়েছে। কল্পান্তরে বিভিন্ন পুরাণে বিভিন্ন রকম নাম দেখা যায়। পদ্মপুরাণ অনুসারে জ্যৈষ্ঠ মাসের শুক্লপক্ষীয়া একাদশীর নামই `পান্ডবা নির্জলা' বা `ভীমসেনী'(ভৈমী) একাদশী।
শ্রীকৃষ্ণ বললেন,হে মহারাজ, মাঘ মাসের শুক্লপক্ষের একাদশী `জয়া' নামে প্রসিদ্ধ।এই তিথি সর্বপাপবিনাশিনী, সর্বশ্রেষ্ঠা, পবিত্রা, সর্বকাম ও মুক্তিপ্রদায়িনী। এই ব্রতের ফলে মানুষ কখনও প্রেতত্ব প্রাপ্তি হয়না।এই একাদশীর নিম্নরূপ উপাখ্যান শোনা যায়।এই ব্রত ব্রহ্মহত্যা জনিত পাপ কেও বিনাশ করে।এই ব্রত পালনে সমস্ত প্রকার দানের ফল লাভ হয়। সকল যজ্ঞ ও তীর্থের পুন্যফল এই ব্রত প্রভাবে আপনা হতেই পালন হয়। অবশেষে মহানন্দে অনন্তকাল বৈকুন্ঠে বাস হয়। এই ব্রতকথা পাঠ ও শ্রবণে অগ্নিষ্টোম যজ্ঞের ফল লাভ হয়।

Yudhishthira Maharaj said, "Oh Lord of the lords, Shri Krishna, all glories unto You! Oh Master of the universe, You alone are the source of the four types of living entities those born from eggs, those born from perspiration, those born from seeds and those born from embryos. You alone are the root cause of all, Oh Lord, and therefore You are the creator, maintainer and destroyer.
My Lord, You have so kindly explained to me the auspicious day known as Sat-tila Ekadashi, which occurs during the dark fortnight (krishna paksha) of the month of Magha (January - February). Now please explain to me the Ekadashi that occurs in the light fortnight (shukla or Gaura paksha) of this month. By what name is it known, and what is the process for observing it? Who is the presiding Deity that is to be worshipped on this sublime day, which is so very dear to You?"
Lord Shri Krishna replied, "Oh Yudhishthira, I shall gladly tell you about the Ekadashi that occurs during the light half of this month of Magha.
This Ekadashi obliterates all kinds of sinful reactions and demoniac influences that may be affecting the spirit soul. It is known as Jaya Ekadashi, and the fortunate soul who observes a fast on this sacred day is relieved of the great burden of ghostly existence. Thus there is no better Ekadashi than this, for it truly bestows freedom from birth and death.

Note on Bhaimi/Jaya Ekadashi. It is said that if one observes upavasa on this day then one receives entrance to Visnu's abode, even though one has not performed the other vratas of the year. NOTE: The half day fast (vrata) for the appearance of Lord Varahadev is also observed on this Ekadashi day, and the utsav (festival celebration - pujas and feasting, etc.) is observed on the Dvadashi, which is when He appeared.
