Cotton is grown in warmer climates such as the Americas, China, India, Australia, and Africa. Cotton seeds thrive under the nurturing conditions of sun and rain, growing into green, bushy shrubs. Within a few weeks, cotton plants bloom with pink and cream-colored blossoms. After pollination, these flowers give way to cotton bolls, the fruit of the cotton plant.
Each cotton boll contains approximately 27 to 45 seeds, and attached to each seed are about 10,000 to 20,000 tiny fibers, each around 1.1 inches (28mm) long. The fibers ripen further in the sun as the bolls mature and turn brown. When they burst open, the cotton is ready for harvesting.
Once harvested, seed cotton is transported to one of Louis Dreyfus Company’s facilities for ginning, where raw cotton fibers and cottonseeds are carefully separated and the fibers tightly pressed into rectangular bales.
Cotton fabric comes from ginned cotton, which is spun, dyed, knitted, or woven into clothes and home furnishings.
