Embark on a breathtaking journey down the renowned Appalachian Trail, a remarkable public footpath that spans an incredible 2,197 miles. Navigate through the awe-striking landscapes and profound history of the Appalachian Mountains.
In this installment, we traverse a 9.2-mile stretch from Three Mile Road to Grafton Turnpike in Lyme, NH.
Highlights of this segment include:
• Mink Brook
• Moose Mountain – soaring to an elevation of 2,292 feet
• Moose Mountain Shelter – this substantial 8-person lean-to is perched on Moose Mountain's ridge. Adjacent are two tent sites along a spur loop trail—one modestly sized and another larger area suitable for three to four tents. Nearby, a unique open-air privy nestles in the woodland, just off the spur trail. The campsite's water source is found at the shelter loop spur's north end, though it may sometimes be dry.
• Viewpoint – a brief detour along a spur trail opens to a semi-clear view of Smarts Mountain to the northeast
• Beaver Pond – a serene walk across bog bridges skirting the pond's edge
• Holt’s Ledge – for a short distance of about 0.1 miles, the Appalachian Trail skirts the edge of Holt’s Ledge, offering several stunning overlooks. For optimal views, follow the AT north until it veers sharply left—continue straight here onto an unmarked spur trail leading to a vast, open cliff face. Directly across the gorge lies Winslow Ledge, part of the Dartmouth Skiway, while Smarts Mountain dominates the northern vista, with Mt. Cube peeking over its shoulder. To the southeast, the silhouettes of Mounts Cardigan and Kearsarge emerge on the horizon.
• Trapper John Shelter – a detour 0.2 miles off the AT on Holt’s Ledge leads to the Trapper John Shelter, a standard Forest Service style lean-to accommodating up to 8 occupants. The surrounding open woodland offers ample tenting space. A brook downhill from the shelter serves as a water source, and a composting privy is about fifty yards behind the shelter. Nearby, the remnants of an old Dartmouth Outing Club cabin can be found.
