Last of the firsts! This was Charlotte’s very first tap routine — “Yankee Doodle,” choreographed by Christine Brunet and performed at Showstoppers.

When I watch this, I don’t just see a dance. I hear it. I hear the little taps echoing from her room, again and again, night after night and us reminding her, “It’s time for bed!”. Hours spent practicing, repeating the same steps until they felt right, until she knew that when she walked back into class the next week, she would be ready. Ready, eager, and waiting for what came next.

I remember that first tap class so clearly. The unsure footing, the tripping over toes, the careful watching, the curiosity that led every sound (and me thinking, what did I get myself into!). Oh, she was feisty, a tiny cannonball of determination, tapping her way forward with more heart than hesitation.

Early years were filled with learning how to listen with her feet, how to move as part of a group, how rhythm becomes language. This was the beginning of coordination, musicality, and a love of tap that grew quietly, steadily, one sound at a time.

I’m endlessly grateful for the teachers who continue to plant the seeds, the teammates who share rehearsal space and stage over the years, and the unseen moments, the practices, the patience, the persistence, all that shape a dancer long before anyone is watching.
